This article by Anthony Esolen (Professor of English at Touchstone College and senior editor of Touchstone magazine) has been on my mind. He wrote it a few years ago about his relationship with is son, Davey, who is autistic. It is subtitled “Anthony Esolen on the Divine Music of an Autistic Son”. I encourage you to read it (and anything else by him as well): “Davey’s Song.”
“Davey’s Song”
A Professor of English writes about the “divine music” of his autistic son.
Eloquently written. The “innocence” which the author presents to us is truly a glimpse into God Himself. Anthony Esolen showers us generously and protectively , as if he were protecting fellow family members or very special friends. He leads us step by step by opening ours by equipping us with what we need in order to to cope and understand the depth and purpose of the term “mixed blessing”. This article restores our faith in God gifts to us of faith, hope, and charity. It also shows us how to use our intellect (God’s ultimate gift to mankind) to the betterment of our fellow humans.
I often sit at Professor Esolen’s feet for his lessons on life.
